Thomastik-Infeld IN344 Superalloy Round Wound Hexcore Bass Guitar Strings

Thomastik-Infeld IN344 Superalloy Round Wound Hexcore Bass Guitar Stringsstar rating 2Brother DaveJune 12, 2011For about six years I have used with great success T.I. PowerBass EB344 roundwound bass sets on numerous passive basses and for even longer I've used the T.I. Jazz Flats on an active bass and liked them enough to keep buying them for that bass. Shortly after the IN344 Infeld set was introduced I had just bought a new Fender P-Bass that still had the factory strings on it, so it seemed a good time to get some of the new IN344 Infeld Superalloys and put them on. I expected great things but didn't find them. The "D" string broke during setup near the bridge retaining ring. This did not inspire confidence. I contacted the USA distributor (Connolly & Company) and they immediately sent a replacement. Fortunately I had bought two sets so I used the "D" string from the 2nd set to complete the setup. Once setup I had lots of bottom and no top. They played fine but had higher tension than the EB344 PowerBass set I was used to playing. The original strings on the Fender had a wider tonal range. Long story short, it is better for me if I spend the extra $15 and get the PowerBass EB344 set. As much as I love the PowerBass set and like the Jazz Flat set from T.I., the Infeld Superalloy set I find far less versatile. For me it is a one trick pony that does the deep "sit in the mix" thing well but can't move up front when called upon to do so. These would be an OK orchestral recording string. I can't say how long the IN344 set lasts as I used them about 10 minutes and then went back to instruments with PowerBass and Jazz Flat strings and sold that P-Bass without seriously playing it again. Also when the replacement string arrived from Connolly and Company I sold the 2nd set on eBay. I will not use the Infeld Superalloy IN344 set again because it just isn't for me at all. I found nothing particularly unique about them. I play in an old school band that plays music from the 60's and these sounded too old school even for that.
